The MAM: The original Run

Okay so, here’s the thing. The Myth About Myths, although started as a zine, was also posted online so I could be one of the cool kids (webcomic folks) and have some artwork to show for it. It ran on both Tumblr & Tapas between 2015 and 2018 before settling into its home on the now defunct myth.jkiakas.com (mostly because I decided to move everything over here and save me the trouble of updating too many separate websites).

Anyway. For Archival’s sake*, while I do have pages now dedicated to The Myth About Myths in their final book-form, I did want to post and preserve some of the original online run of these guys. For the fuck of it, I’ll even put them in their original order.

*Do be warned… some of my language is pretty crass, blunt and rude in some of these and a bit of a time capsule as to where my personal growth was at the time. Sarcasm can be a fun tool but it also can lead to a bit of unfriendly language. That was… one of the reasons the series was discontinued and I haven’t gone back since. I apologise for all my offence caused. I thought it was still worth posting these somewhere because they did (and do, maybe) still exist in zine form in people’s homes. But I’ve grown a lot since writing these, I’d like to think. It’s a source of pride to know that I’ve evolved in the decade since I made these.

ANYWAY… little tangent. I don’t think there’s anything EXTREME in there (admittedly I haven’t re-read them in some time because it took me about 500 hours to format this and my website pages for each zine) but I do know there’s just a lot of flippant hand-waving to some issues and commentary I might have phrased different if I were re-writing it now.

UNRELATED… but when I first started writing these I thought I was cis & straight and now I’m full blown trans & queer. Its completely irrelevant …….. unless…..

Strap in, its… a bit of a long run~

Zine 1: Greek Gods

Olympians were a group of twelve gods and goddesses who were considered the cream of the crop and were some of the most famed characters in mythology of all time. These deities were the greatest source of worship and praise of antiquity and were found in various artistic forms. The other gods mentioned in this segment were often of the same generation at these Olympians and helped serve their needs.

zine 2: primordial Greek Gods

This MaM (Myth about Myths) zine features some of the oldest Gods of Ancient Greece. These buggers tend to represent huge gaping concepts rather than actual physical things, or the smaller things the popular Gods were known for. Some of these were considered Gods, some mere gaping concepts I thought would be important to personify because, crazy enough, the Greeks gave everything some sort of personality. I’m just here to make this easier (and maybe even a little weirder) for you to understand.

zine 3: Greek Heroes

This MaM (Myth about Myths) zine features some of our favourite Ancient Greek (and some not-so Greek) Heroes. From battling monsters, saving damsels, teaming up on fantastic adventures, to sometimes even facing off against one another. Greek Heroes were often just as confusing as (or probably as confused by) the Gods themselves.
Now, the thing about these guys, was that nearly all of them had pages and pages of epic heroism and battles and nuances to their stories. So, this is a disclaimer in advance that just by looking these up you’ll be able to have fun reading about all the silly shit they’ve done in much greater detail.
For the SUPER ABRIDGED VERSION, I’ve got you covered.

zine 4: greek ladies

This MaM (Myth about Myths) zine features some of the most highly underrated characters in Greek Mythology, the ladies. Now, reading up on some myths I quickly realized that these ladies are rough and tough, sometimes when you least expect it. They’ve got their quirks, squabbles and distress and, honestly? They don’t deserve to be left out of my scrutiny.
Let me tell you a few things about some Greek Ladies.

zine 5: Greek Titans

This MaM (Myth about Myths) zine features Greek Titans in all their splendid glory. ‘But hey, J.” You might say, “What’s the difference between a Titan and a God?” And to that I say, that Titans are essentially concepts (which I’m about to personify a little bit more so that it will make, hopefully, more sense). It’s said they were called Titans (aka ‘stretchers’) because they “stretched with a great recklessness to accomplish a huge deed”.
Unlike the previous zines, these folks were either all decked out with information and mythological importance… Or absolutely not important at all and were only mentioned in passing. I just gathered everyone into one zine because regardless of their roles in myth, sometimes their role as a concept was horribly badass (and I wanted to draw it so… You’re welcome).

zine 6: Greek Lovers

This MaM (Myth about Myths) zine features Greek Lovers of all shapes, sizes (and sometimes even sexualities ohoho). It comes to no surprise out hugely queer a lot of these myths were so, I mean, I’m not going to question any of it but I will damn well enjoy showing it off to all of you.
And to any one questioning my research skills I promise you these will probably all pop up on your own googling spree. You’re so humbly welcome.

zine 7: greek Monsters

This MaM (Myth about Myths) zine features Greek Beasts and Monsters, a very abridged guide of the most popular creatures in Greek Mythology. Ferocious and dangerous. Between clawing teeth, thick limbs, snake-ish attributes, their absolutely tyrannical sizes! Greek Ancients were as creative with the building of their beasts as they were with the adventures they sent their heroes on to defeat them. Unfortunately for these poor beasts, anyhow. Nothing but a means to an end for any and all of them.

This is the first time Greek Monsters has ever been posted online which means I formatted my zine entries just to complete this post for all of you. Isn’t that so nice of me.

Enjoy.

PS — some might notice I backdated this to 2018 when the original zines were completed since it felt right… and for my own personal timeline. But for future-me’s curiosity and for those reading this years estranged from now (hopefully maybe??) I did write this in July 2025~
